Small Update
Small both because of the size of the car and because it only contains one photo. I’ve been super busy lately and haven’t had time to edit my Audi A1 shots from several weeks ago before just now. I can’t show you the full set yet, but want to share this picture which hit the cutting floor as it didn’t quite flow with the rest of the set.
Shot just as the sun was setting I aimed for a moody picture in terms of the general exposure and also made sure those signature Audi headlights were exposed correctly.
Click the picture if you want to view it larger and watch this space for more Audi A1 pictures as soon as the magazine they are for leaves the printing press.
Location: Wolfsburg
Just a quick post from the hotel in Wolfsburg, Germany. Left Oslo, Norway at 05:30 this morning and arrived here sometime around 19:00. Had to stop by the Volkswagen HQ and snap a quick pic of the car we’re driving.
A quick beer now before we hit the bunks and get up early tomorrow to go to Wörthersee. Stay tuned.
Wörthersee Tour 2010
If you have been following my blog for a while you know I went to Austria last year for the 28 annual Gti-treffen. For those of you unfamiliar with the Gti-treffen in Reifnitz, it is probably the worlds largest VW-event held by the beautiful Wörthersee lake. 200 000 visitors attend the event and literally invade Reifnitz and the other cities around lake Wörthersee.
We had a blast there last year and made reservations for this year the moment we got home. So, come Tuesday I’m of again for a full 10 days of checking out Europes hottest Volkswagen and Audi’s, meeting up with dubbers from all around the world, partying and snapping pictures.
I’ll try to update the Blog while I’m there, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, check out last years pictures here!
98Super.no
Some weeks ago I was was tipped of by a fellow photographer to contact the guys behind www.98super.no and ask if they wanted to feature me on their team.
98super is a norwegian site managed by Espen B Olsen and Anders Bull and the purpose of the site is for car owners that want quality photos of their cars to get in touch with photographers specialized in automotive photography. I shot them an email and asked if they wanted me on their team and to my delight they liked my pictures and wanted to list me as one of their photographers.
As well as running 98Super, Espen and Anders does regular work shooting advertising pictures for Ferdinand Motor in Bergen. Among other photograpers on the site you’ll find Kasper van Wallinga who does a lot of stuff for Norwegian car magazine Autofil and Camilla Smistad Tofterå who works for Gatebil Magazine. So if you’re not local to me and need some out of the ordinary shots for selling your car or just want a shoot done to have some nice pictures to hang on the wall in the garage, don’t hesitate to check out the site to find a photographer in your area.
Stanceworks – Canibeat
Being both a car guy and a photographer, I spend quite some time browsing the web for inspiration both for my cars and for my photography. One of the places I make sure to stop by as often as possible is Stanceworks. The quality of both the cars they feature, and the photography there is amazing. And to my surprise they found my work good enough to grace their pages on a couple of occasions :) Head on over there to check out some great stanced cars and awesome photography!
Small Changes
Unless you’ve had this page bookmarked or followed a link from either my flickr of facebook-page, you’ve had to type in http://blog.naess.net to get to my blog. If you tried to type the more intuitive www.naess.net, you’ve been redirected to my (rather bad) portfolio page. Not liking the layout there, I’ve been bothered by seeing redirects from there to the blog. I’ve had ambitions to upgrade the portfolio page for ages, but never gotten around to it. Seeing as I usually post new stuff on the blog first, and to make things easier, I changed it so www.naess.net now redirects to the blog.
While I was at it, I moved the portfolio to http://portfolio.naess.net and added a couple of pictures for good measure. And I promise I’l change the portfolio page somewhere down the road.
One of the pictures I added there is from a recent shoot with a Audi A4 Allroad for Treffpunkt Magazine. Involving snow, a slammed Audi A5 tracking car and a speeding ticket, I’ll tell you all about that when the article is out in a week or two. Stay Tuned!

Happy New Year!
Mark Twain once said that New Year’s is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls and humbug resolutions. One might be tempted to agree, but I’d still like to take the oppertunety to thank all of my family, old and new friends for an amazing year.
As for my photography, I might have thought myself, but without the support of friends and family I would never have come this far. Through all of your compliments and criticism I probably would have still been taking photos with wonky horisonts, been an f-stop underexposed or probably have left the camera at home more often than not…
So again, thank you and the best wishes for a happy new year!

Happy Holidays
Ideally I would have posted up a snowy picture to suit the season and wish all of you a merry christmas, but I couldn’t find one, so you’ll have to make do with this old shot from when I was new to photography back in 2008.
The car in the picture was my third Volkswagen Mk1 and looked nothing like this when I bought it. The plan was to give it a new coat of paint and some new parts and then use it as a daily, but things got a bit out of hand and it ended up way to nice for being used on a daily basis. The wheels are Custom painted BBS RM’s with Porsche Grand Prix White and the car is lowered on FK-Coilovers.
Check out the picture on flickr by clicking on it if you want to view a larger version.
Successful Sciroccos
After shooting the 4 Sciroccos earlier this year I’ve had a huge amount of traffic on the two posts I made about it. I’ve had people contacting me asking to use the pictures for stuff like a new logo, just like Scirocconet.co.uk did. Stuff like that is really nice and for the most part we work stuff out with little or no effort.
A UK store called Niche Conversions did however not ask to use my pictures… But did anyway… I’ve sent them a bill according to what I usually charge, but of course they have not replied. So if anyone in the UK could help me out with some advice on this matter I’d really appreciate it.
Anyways, here’s another Scirocco shot for you guys to enjoy. (everybody but the folks behind Niche Conversions of course ;) )
Aftermath – Audunbakken 2009
Don’t worry about the title, I just didn’t want to use the same one as last time I wrote about the Audunbakken Festival. I just wanted to let you know that the pictures are now out on their website www.audunbakken.com. You’ll find the pictures taken by me and Michaela Klouda are avalible under the “Media” section. Access them through the link called “Bilde” on www.audunbakken.com or click the pictures below to go straight to my albums there.
Clicking the picture above will bring you to my concert photos while clicking the one below will take you to the pictures of all the people there and the Performance Art Act.
What I feel is worth mentioning is the fact that almost all pictures are Straight out of Camera. Little or none post processing was used :)
Audunbakken 2009
The Adunbakken festival, held each summer since 2003 in Odalen, Norway is described as Norways most charming festival. Arranged by a group of friends people from near and far flock together at the festival grounds held in a quarry far from glamourus, decorated by old bedsheets and homemade posters an generally have a blast.
Paul Stanley once said that the great thing about rock-n-roll is you realize the top of the mountain is big enough for more than one band, which really sums last night at the Audunbakken festival. Although the main attraction “Backstreet Girls” might have drawn the biggest crowd, several of the lesser known bands like “Izakaia Heartbeat”, “Graceland Mayhem” and “Anton Rud & the wrong way” home put on an equally great performance.
I was there enjoying myself and taking pictures for the festival management so I’ll be sending most of them over to be published at their website, but here are some teasers for ya ;)
Crazy week, Crazy lights
Boy, the last couple of weeks has been crazy busy with stuff happening both at home and work. No time for anything really, so when Sunday came and I had a couple of hours to spare I went out and nursed my other hobby, the previously posted Volkswagen Golf.
I gave it a thorough clean, inside and out and got my front lamps tinted.
Naturally I had to bring out the camera and make sure to capture it “on film”. This picture is actually a HDR-picture like in the one in this post. In the previous one I’ve exaggerated the HDR-effect, something I didn’t want to do in this one. I wanted the picture to look like a “real” photo but seeing as the lighting on site was terrible I took three different exposures to catch as much detail as possible. The three exposures are shot handheld after being inspired by Pete Leong who captures some really great handheld HDR’s.
Check out his flickr photostream or his website here. Don’t forget to click the picture of my car to view it larger as well.
Ashes To Ashes
The last week has been a hard one. Sadly, my girlfriends grandmother passed away the other day and the family wanted me to take some pictures during the funeral.
I must say, this was one of the single most hardest things I’ve actually done. Seeing how I also knew the deceaced and the family I wanted to approach the whole thing with as much respect and caution as possible. You can’t imagine how loud the sound of the camera shutter sounds inside a church. This in mind you don’t want to act all paparazzi inside the church with the family gathered in silence to mourn.
After taking some shots of the decoration inside the church and a couple of pictures of the family I packed up my gear and put it back in the car.
When the ceremony was over and the family started leaving the grave I got my camera back out and shot some of the decorations at the grave. The shot below was the one that came out the best and I am only publishing it as it is not to personal for the family.
In Loving memory of Solveig Johanne Johansen.
Sneak Preview
Here’s a little sneak preview on a project I’m working on. A client saw one of my earlier pictures of a Jada Toys die-cast Volkswagen pickup and wanted something similar to frame and use for his sons bedroom. He supplied me with another Jada Toys 1/24 scale Volkswagen bus and told me to have a go at it. I’ve since then acquired yet another model and will be shooting the three of them separately for framing.
I set up the studio yesterday and brought out the models. Here’s one of the outtakes.
The color on the red bus is a bit off and I’m still not happy with the way it looks against the black backdrop. So I will be shooting it again tonight.
As always, clicking the picture will open my flickr photostream where the picture is available in high resolution
Phenomena
Double post today, but here goes.
The last year or so a phenomena called HDR has swept across image sharing websites, forums and the net in general. In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI or just HDR) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of luminances between light and dark areas of a scene than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows.
To the Human Eye this produces some quite spectaclular images when viewed on a computer screen. I’m no pro at this like for instance Arin Ahnell , Toni_V or Michael (stocks photography), but I do give HDR a go now and then. Here’s a proceced shot from tonight.
Feel free to check it out on Flickr where you can view the image in higher resolution :) And make sure to visit the guys I mentioned above to view their work. Click on their names and enjoy!
A sunset picture… of sorts…
Got my new wheels mounted yesterday and dialed in the suspention today. Went out for a test spin and snapped a picture of the car just for kicks. I imagined it a bit more moody, but i like how this came out.
Clicking the picture will open my flickr photostream in a new window where you can view the picture in higher resolution.
Epiphyllum
Today I got the chance to shoot something I usually don’t care much for, a flower. This is a Epiphyllum which actually is a cactus believe it or not.
The Epiphyllum usually blooms at this time a year, but when bloomed, the flower only lasts a day or two. The owner has been wanting a picture of this flower for years but allegedly didn’t dare to take a shot of it because last time she tried the whole plant went ahead and died on her…
As mentioned, I don’t care much for flowers, but it was fun to shoot and I think it came out ok. Either way the Epiphyllum must be one of the worlds most beautiful cactuses.

More Polo Cross
So, I’ve done some post processing on the shots from the shoot with the Polo Cross from the other night. I wanted a crossover with a high key and high contrast to try to make the car a bit more gritty. Not sure if I succeeded in the latter, but it’s fun to experiment a bit :)
Again, clicking on the photo will bring you to my flickr Photostream where a higher resolution version can be viewed.
Polo Cross
Went out for a small shoot this evening with a Volkswagen Polo Cross. Wanted to try out my 50 mm prime, but my China Flash triggers acted up and I was forced to change to a 17-70 to get closer. The triggers acting up caused me to loose focus and the composition is all but great. Still, this image came out quite alright.
Click the picture to visit flickr where you’ll be able to view the picure in high res.
Wax on, Wax off
Worked on the MkV for most of the day today. Got the fenders rolled, washed the car and finished of by polishing and waxing it. Got to love the wet look a car gets from a fresh coat of wax.
I was hoping to take some pictures of it as well but I was absolutely shot after all the waxing so I didn’t have any energy left to be creative. Only snapped a couple of shots and this one came out on top.
Click the picture and it opens in a new window where you can view it in higher resolution. Make sure to visit my photostream on flickr.com while you’re at it ;)
Time Warp
Now, the two hosts of Discovery Channels new series Time Warp are officially my new heroes!
Together MIT scientist and teacher Jeff Lieberman — along with digital-imaging expert Matt Kearney — uses new technologies to bring truly never-before-seen wonders into a form that the human eye can actually process. Photography might be all about capturing the moment but shooting at up to 10000 frames per second these guys up the ante and capture all the moments so to speak.
Using the latest in high-speed photography combined with great lighting the Time Warp team takes some natural events (a cat licking its paw, a champagne bottle being opened) — and some not-so-natural (a water balloon to the face, a raw piece of chicken exploding) — and turns them into a thing of both beauty and learning.
Check out the images below and do try to catch the show whenever it airs at Discovery in your area :)
